How to Make a Great Career Choice

Perhaps one of the most important decisions in a working person’s or careerist’s life is regarding the choice of future career. This is very significant since the ultimate choice could either make or mar one’s future life, in that the right choice would ensure professional success and all that goes along with it, and the wrong one would consign the student to virtual despair and despondency.

A lot about career choice does depend upon the concerned individual since it is her life that needs to be build, brick by brick. One’s aptitudes, fascinations, likes and career preferences are indeed important and it is also necessary to avoid the impacts of one’s dislikes and disinclination, while making reasoned and well judged decision or exercising choice about one’s future career. Perhaps one of the major obstacle in career choices is the influence and pressures exerted by parents, unwittingly perhaps in the furtherance of career prospects of their wards, while not knowing or caring to know whether this could be an ultimate and wisest career choice and one should exercise full care not to yield to parental pressures or instigation, since this could be fatal choice.

However, a few tips would indeed be useful in making a great career choice, suitably to one’s personality, preferences, aptitudes and skill sets that could serve one well in future too.
  1. Conduct a personal Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) test. This is in order to determine the best career option that could be suitable for a person. If the strengths are creativity, robust expression power, command over languages, abstract thinking and enterprising, then a choice of Advertising, Sales and Marketing or even Creative Writing or academics, may not be a bad choice. A person who loves to help people in physical or mental distress could opt for a nursing, health care practitioner or physician job. People fond of crime and crime fighting should chose a forensic expert, law enforcement officer or other job.
  2. Seek professional help if need be: It may often happen that one’s personal knowledge about oneself is inadequate to reach an informed decision and in such case it is well advised to seek help from career counselor, therapist or even psychologists to know which line would be best given a set of traits and aptitudes. There is no cause for embarrassment since it is a question of one’s career and it outcomes
  3. Spotting weakness is more important than identifying strengths: Since people are judged by their weaknesses and deficits, it is important that careerist is well aware of her weak areas like lack of good personality, poor writing skills and presentations. Such people are better suited for work which does not demand such skills. It is necessary and important to veer away from weaknesses that could adversely impact career choice and prospects.
  4. Career prospects and growth potential: Even if one were good at particular skill, it is necessary that great opportunities exist and one could make a good career choice for it. It is no use being stuck to a profession that has no real future career prospects.
